A Classic Dessert with a Delicious Twist
We recently had the pleasure of eating the best cupcakes in Nutley. If you haven’t already, we urge you to rush post-haste to Jarets Stuffed Cupcakes on Franklin Avenue and find out just what major news outlets like the New York Times, the Star Ledger and NBC have been raving about. Even Oprah and Food Network Star Rachael Ray have gotten their hands on these famous treats.
We ordered four delicious flavors: Outrageous Oreo, Pumpkin King, Jazzy Razz and Red Velvet. These are no elf-sized, finger food confections. Jarets doesn’t hold back. Their cupcakes are big, rich, indulgent and topped with a generous heaping of icing. At the center of each is a luxurious filling unique to each cupcake. Our personal favorite was the Red Velvet, stuffed with decadent vanilla mousse and finished off with what might be the most heavenly cream cheese icing in the world. They’re so good, you’ll want to hide them from the kids.

Maureen and Keith Jaret call themselves the “Accidental Bakers.” Keith graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and worked at several high profile restaurants, including Hilton International’s renowned Cafe 43. There, he met Maureen, who worked on Wall Street. They went on to launch a successful European-inspired catering company called A Savoire Affaire, and in 2001 they moved to Nutley and opened The Petite Cafe.
It was at the Petite Cafe that Maureen began to serve a fabulous chocolate cake. It was extremely well-received by the few customers who ordered it, so Maureen began to wonder why it wasn’t more popular. After requesting feedback from patrons, she learned that the issue was the cake’s plain appearance. It lacked visual appeal. There were no flowers, no fancy icing flourishes, nothing to make the cake stand out. So, regardless of how delicious the cake tasted, people went elsewhere.
Maureen was undeterred. She enrolled in a cake decorating class at Nutley High School and found that her creations were best showcased not as full cake slices, but stuffed cupcakes. The rest is history.
Since the very first stuffed cake was introduced in 2005, the “Accidental Bakers” and their now famous stuffed cupcake shop have become a fixture in Nutley. Visitors flock from New Jersey and beyond for a Cannoli Dream or an Anna Banana, but it’s the residents of Nutley who love Jarets the most. They treat their kids for midday dessert. They stop by to pick up some treats for friends, family members or coworkers. They’re proud to support a homegrown Nutley business.Jarets Stuffed Cupcakes
